Highgate sits on one of the highest hills in north London, a historic village that has kept its streetscape largely intact despite three boroughs meeting on the hill. The Haringey portion takes in the north and east, around Highgate Wood and Queen's Wood. The name comes from a medieval toll-gate on the Bishop of London's hunting park, recorded around 1318, and the village became a fashionable retreat from the 17th century onwards.
