FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How the scores work, what the Day Pass and WAYB+ unlock, and how to get back in if you've already paid.

Using where are you based?

What is WAYB, in one line?

A map that scores every London neighbourhood on the things that shape daily life — transport, safety, schools, green space, culture, heritage and the property market — so you can compare areas honestly and decide where to live.

Is WAYB telling me where to buy?

No. WAYB helps you shortlist neighbourhoods. It is not financial, legal, surveying, school-admissions or estate-agent advice — always check the exact street and property before you commit.

Which areas does WAYB cover?

Every ward in Greater London — all 684 of them. We score at ward level rather than by postcode because that's where most public data is meaningful.

Why score wards instead of individual homes?

Most public data is published at small-area or ward level, not per address. A single home can differ from its ward, so treat a score as a strong starting point and then check the specific street.

How are the scores worked out?

Each of the nine layers is built from public datasets and converted to a 0–100 score; the colour on the map shows where each area sits in the London-wide spread. The full method — every layer and its sources — is on the How it works page.

Why does a good area sometimes have a low score?

A score is only one lens. An expensive, central area can be brilliant culturally and still score low on quiet, budget fit or crime mix. The useful part is seeing the trade-off, not chasing a single number.

Data & accuracy

How fresh is the data?

Our pipeline checks for updates weekly, but each source keeps its own schedule — police crime data and the property market refresh monthly, while census, school inspections and similar update less often. Scores re-compute whenever the underlying data changes.

Can I rely on the property prices in the wizard?

Use them as a filter and a warning system, not a promise. We estimate affordability from market data plus assumptions about property type and size; live listings can move quickly, so confirm against real listings before you decide.

Paid access

What's the difference between a Day Pass and WAYB+?

A Day Pass (£4.99) unlocks every Day Pass feature for 24 hours: the full ward deep-dives (prices & price-per-square-foot, rent estimates and 30-year price trends; crime by category with trends; school inspection history; air & noise; venue mix), neighbourhood matches with the price difference for each, your full wizard shortlist including the near-misses, plus unlimited favourites and shareable links. WAYB+ (£6.99/mo) is that same access kept on month-to-month for a search that runs over weeks, and adds the “What's changing here” panel on every ward (recent planning approvals and venue openings or closures). Pick the Day Pass for a single decision; WAYB+ for an ongoing search.

Do I need an account? How do I get access after I pay?

No account and no password. When you pay, we unlock the paid features in the browser you bought from, and email a confirmation to the address you used. That email also carries a “Restore access” link so you can sign back in on any other device or browser.

I already paid but I'm seeing the paywall again — do I pay again?

No — please don't pay again. Access is tied to your purchase, not to a login, but it's remembered per browser — so a new device, a different browser, or clearing your browsing data will show the paywall again. To restore it, open the confirmation email from where are you based? and tap Restore access: that re-activates your Day Pass or WAYB+ on whatever device you're reading the email on. Can't find the email? Email us at hello@whereareyoubased.com and we'll sort it out.

What happens when my Day Pass expires?

After 24 hours the Day Pass ends and the paid features lock again. Anything you favourited stays in that browser. If your search is running over a longer period, WAYB+ keeps access on month-to-month instead of buying repeat Day Passes.

How do I cancel WAYB+?

Cancel any time — there's no tie-in. Use the link on your Stripe receipt, or email hello@whereareyoubased.com, and we'll cancel the renewal. You keep access until the end of the month you've already paid for, then it simply stops.

Can I get a refund?

If a purchase went wrong, email hello@whereareyoubased.com with your Stripe receipt and we'll be fair. Because paid access is delivered instantly, a used Day Pass is generally non-refundable — but do get in touch if you hit a genuine problem.

Is my payment secure?

Payments are handled entirely by Stripe — we never see or store your card details. See the Privacy and Terms pages for the full picture.

Still deciding?

Start with the wizard, compare the rankings, then read the relevant ward pages before looking at specific streets.
