Lewisham, London
PocketsBlackheath West (Church of St Margaret · River Quaggy · Church of the Ascension · Lewisham Road · The Pagoda)Blackheath Village (Lee Terrace · Colonnade House · Kid Brook · south)Central Lewisham South
Blackheath sits at Lewisham's north-eastern edge, wrapped around the great open common where the borough meets Greenwich. The whole ward is inside a conservation area. The character is a Georgian and early-Victorian hill village, consistently one of the more coherent pieces of historic London suburbia. Heritage is exceptional: one hundred and forty-two listed buildings include the Grade I Boone's Chapel (attributed to Christopher Wren and built in 1683, one of only two Grade I listings in the borough), the Grade II* Pagoda (dating back to 1767) and the Grade II* Colonnade House. Green space is substantial at seventy-five hectares, dominated by the sixty-eight-hectare Blackheath itself, and twenty-six Ofsted-outstanding schools are within reach. Non-food amenity is heavy at four hundred and fifty-three venues. The drawbacks are modest. Public transport is moderate — Blackheath station on Southeastern runs to London Bridge but there is no Tube — and safety sits close to the London middle, with some weighting from evening activity around the village.
