Camden, London
Hampstead Town wraps around the south-western edge of Hampstead Heath, and its physical character is set by that 320-hectare commons as much as by any street pattern. The ward holds 340 listed buildings, three of them at Grade I — Keats House, Fenton House and Burgh House — and the Heath itself pushes the green-space figure into the upper tier for Inner London. The ward has drawn writers, painters and émigrés for two centuries — Constable spent his final decade on Well Walk, Keats wrote the 'Ode to a Nightingale' on Keats Grove, and the interwar years brought a wave of Central European refugees that gave the area its intellectual layer. That inheritance is still legible in the bookshops, the independent galleries and the Heath-side pubs. The trade-off is the market: buying here is expensive by any measure, and Hampstead Town's housing stock turns over slowly. Transport is decent rather than excellent, resting on the Northern line at Hampstead and Belsize Park with buses south to Camden.

John Keats wrote 'Ode to a Nightingale' in the garden of what is now Keats House on Keats Grove, reportedly in a single morning in May 1819 under a plum tree; he lived there from 1818 to 1820, fell in love with the girl next door, Fanny Brawne, and left for Rome, where he died, a year later.
John Constable lived on Well Walk from 1827 until his death in 1837, painting the Heath repeatedly; in the following century George Orwell worked shifts at Booklovers' Corner on South End Road, the bookshop that sits behind his novel 'Keep the Aspidistra Flying'.
