Privacy Policy

You can browse the map, rankings, ward pages and wizard without an account and without giving us any personal information. We do not sell personal data and we do not run ad tracking. We only need personal data when you buy access or contact us.

The data controller is the operator of WAYB — an individual based in the United Kingdom (see the Terms of Service). For anything in this policy, contact hello@whereareyoubased.com.

• Free browsing: no account, no sign-up and no personal profile required — we collect no personally identifying information.
• Purchases: your email address, a Stripe payment reference and your entitlement status (which features you have unlocked, and until when).
• Unlocks: an essential wayb_ent cookie so the site can confirm your access.
• Support: whatever you choose to send us by email.

We use purchase data to deliver paid access, send unlock emails, prevent entitlement loss, handle refunds and meet accounting obligations. We never use your data for advertising, and we run no tracking or advertising analytics. The only third-party measurement we use is Cloudflare Web Analytics — a cookie-free service that shows us aggregate page-view and performance counts. Cloudflare states it does not collect or use visitors' personal data and does not track people across sites.

To see whether the site works as a product, we also count anonymous usage steps on our own server — for example, how many visitors start the area wizard or reach a paywall in a week. These counts are stored with no IP address, no device details and no identifiers of any kind, so they cannot be linked to you or to any other page you visit.

To understand demand for London areas, we count anonymous choices in aggregate: which areas are searched for, compared or shortlisted, and which wizard options are picked. Each count is a plain daily tally against an area or an option — for example “this ward was searched 14 times today” — stored with the same zero identifiers as above. Nothing is linked to a person or a session, your individual answers are never stored together, there are no accounts, and no cookies or ad tracking are involved in any of this.

Product news by email is strictly opt-in. The checkout form shows an optional, unticked “occasional product news” box beside the email field; we record your choice and will only ever send product news to people who ticked it. Any product-news email we send will include an unsubscribe link, and opting out never affects your paid access. If you didn't tick the box — or bought before it existed — you only receive the transactional emails needed to deliver what you paid for (unlock, restore-access and cancellation confirmations).

WAYB uses a small number of trusted processors: Stripe for payments, Resend for transactional email, Neon for database storage, and Cloudflare for hosting, CDN and cookie-free web analytics. Each processes data only as needed to run the service, under its own security and international-transfer safeguards.

The only cookie WAYB itself sets is a strictly necessary wayb_ent cookie that records your paid-access entitlement so unlocked features keep working as you move around the site. Because it is essential to a service you have asked for, it does not require consent and there is no cookie banner to dismiss.

Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, may set its own strictly necessary security cookies to protect the site; these are not used to track you. Stripe Checkout runs on Stripe's own domain, so it does not set cookies here. We may also use your browser's local storage to remember lightweight UI preferences on your device. WAYB sets no advertising cookies, no analytics cookies and no cross-site tracking of any kind.

Under UK GDPR you can ask to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, or object to processing. To request deletion of your data, email hello@whereareyoubased.com from your purchase address and we will erase your records. We keep purchase and entitlement records for up to six years to meet UK tax and accounting rules, after which they are deleted. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office.
