Barnet, London
Cricklewood straddles the Edgware Road in north-west London, sitting at the meeting point of three boroughs — the Barnet part covers the eastern side of the road. The area grew from a coach stop on the old Roman road into an industrial and railway suburb after the Midland Railway opened its station in 1868 and built the Railway Terraces for its workers. Transport is reasonable, with Cricklewood Thameslink giving direct trains to St Pancras and the Edgware Road carrying frequent buses. Around 80 food venues and a wide choice of places to eat reflect a high street that stayed busy through successive waves of migration. Clitterhouse Playing Fields provides 16 hectares of open space, and there are 15 Ofsted-outstanding schools within reach. The drawbacks weigh on the overall score. Safety sits well below the London median, air-quality scores are poor thanks to Edgware Road traffic, and only a handful of buildings are listed, including the Grade II Crown Public House. Major redevelopment at Brent Cross West is reshaping the edges of the area but has not yet lifted the ward's numbers.
