Westminster, London
Abbey Road sits in St John's Wood in north-west Westminster, north-west of Regent's Park. The area was built up in the 1820s and 1830s largely on land owned by the Eyre family since the 13th century, making it one of the first examples of suburban residential development in inner London. Abbey Road itself was created in 1829 from an existing farm track called Abbey Lane, named for the nearby medieval Kilburn Priory. Abbey Road Studios, opened in November 1931 at 3 Abbey Road, has recorded the London Symphony Orchestra under Elgar, the Beatles, Queen, Radiohead and Lady Gaga among many others. The Beatles' zebra crossing outside the studios has been Grade II listed since December 2010. The ward has 225 listed buildings including the Grade II* Church of St Mark, the Grade II* Crockers Public House and the Grade II* Chapel to the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth, with around 76.5 percent inside a conservation area. Transport is good with St John's Wood, Maida Vale and Warwick Avenue tube stations, and 32 Ofsted-outstanding schools sit within reach. The drawbacks: green space is thin at 0.7 hectares with Violet Hill Park the largest patch, market affordability is weak, and the ward's culture score reflects a quiet residential grain despite the studios.
