Tower Hamlets, London
Blackwall and Cubitt Town sits on the eastern side of the Isle of Dogs in Tower Hamlets, a post-industrial ward that looks out across the Thames to Greenwich. Cubitt Town was redeveloped by William Cubitt, Lord Mayor of London from 1860–62, after whom it is named, as part of the 1840s–1850s expansion of the Port of London; Blackwall was a centre of shipbuilding until 1987, with Westwood, Baillie and Yarrow among the yards. The ward has 26 listed buildings including the Grade I Blackwall Basin, the Grade II* Isle of Dogs Pumping Station and the Grade II Isle House. Transport is good: Canary Wharf, South Quay, Crossharbour, Island Gardens and Canning Town on the DLR, Jubilee line and Elizabeth line give strong access. The food and non-food scene is very dense at around 107 and 221 venues, and 29 Ofsted-outstanding schools sit within reach. The drawbacks: safety scores sit below the London median, air-quality is poor from the surrounding arterial roads, heritage cover is limited with only around 7.9 percent inside a conservation area, and high-rise regeneration has produced wide streets that can feel windswept.
