Wandsworth, London
Nine Elms covers the new river-facing zone between Vauxhall and Battersea, one of the most intensively redeveloped wards in London. The single listed building is the Grade II* Battersea Power Station, built in two phases between 1929 and 1941 to the designs of J. Theo Halliday and Giles Gilbert Scott, which reopened to the public in October 2022 after nearly forty years of closure. The Northern line extension delivered two new stations in September 2021 — Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station — transforming access. Ten outstanding schools lie within reach and the food-and-drink count reflects the new riverside scene. The drawbacks are sharp: green cover within the ward is essentially nil at under two hectares, with Riverside Gardens the only named space; safety readings are well below the London average, driven by busy footfall around the Power Station and the US Embassy; air quality is poor thanks to Nine Elms Lane and the Vauxhall approach; and heritage texture beyond the Power Station is essentially nonexistent.
