Lewisham, London
PocketsNew Cross & Deptford South (Sanford Street · Pagnell Street · Fordham Park · Margaret McMillan Park · Sue Godfrey Nature Park)Deptford North (Folkestone Gardens · Evelyn Green · Church of St Paul)
Deptford sits on the south bank of the Thames between Greenwich and New Cross, a Lewisham ward whose entire footprint lies inside a conservation area and whose street layout still echoes the Royal Dockyard that Henry VIII founded here in 1513. The 24 listed buildings include the Grade I Church of St Paul, a Baroque Thomas Archer church of 1730 widely considered one of the finest outside the City, and the Grade II* early-Georgian terraces on Albury Street, built between 1705 and 1717 for sea captains and shipwrights and decorated with carved door hoods in the manner of the local Deptford woodcarving tradition that John Evelyn first spotted in Grinling Gibbons on a nearby Deptford lane. Transport is reasonable in several directions: the DLR at Deptford Bridge, the Overground at New Cross, and main-line trains at Deptford station feed into London Bridge and Canary Wharf. Housing is among the more affordable in inner south-east London, Deptford Market Yard and Douglas Way hold one of the longest-running street markets south of the river, and the food and independent retail offer has thickened considerably along Deptford High Street in the last decade. The trade-offs are real: crime figures are high, air quality is poor thanks to the A2 and heavy through-traffic on Evelyn Street, and green space within the ward itself is thin — residents walk to Fordham Park or across to Greenwich for anything larger.

Christopher Marlowe, the Elizabethan playwright, was stabbed above the right eye and killed in Eleanor Bull's lodging house in Deptford Strand on 30 May 1593 during what the 1925-rediscovered coroner's report calls a quarrel over the bill; he was buried in an unmarked grave at St Nicholas's, Deptford, two days later.
Curated comparisons with the places people weigh up against it — nine data layers, an honest verdict, and who should pick which.
In 1698 Peter the Great of Russia spent three months at Sayes Court in Deptford learning shipbuilding at the Royal Dockyard; he was such a disruptive tenant — the tsar and his companions reportedly trundled one another through John Evelyn's prized holly hedge in a wheelbarrow while drunk — that Evelyn had to claim £350 from the Treasury for repairs after they left.
