Tower Hamlets, London
Canary Wharf occupies the core of the Isle of Dogs, on land reclaimed from the Thames for the West India Docks in 1802 and rebuilt from the 1980s as London's second major financial district. The street grid is young, the towers younger still. Transport is strong in every direction — Jubilee line, Elizabeth line, DLR and the Thames Clipper all meet here — and the food and retail offer reflects the daytime working population rather than the resident one. Cascades, one of the first post-dock residential towers from 1988, is Grade II listed, and the listed buildings that do exist elsewhere are mostly industrial fragments from the dock era, including the Grade I quay walls and warehouse remains at the northern end. The ward carries a low heritage score as a result, and green space is limited to a handful of small riverside gardens; most residents walk to Mudchute Park or the Isle of Dogs foreshore. Housing is newer, smaller and more volatile on price than almost anywhere else in inner London.

Canary Wharf takes its name from a two-storey transit shed built in 1936 at berth 32 of the West India Import Dock, leased by Fruit Lines Ltd, a subsidiary of the Norwegian Fred. Olsen line, to land bananas and other fruit shipped from the Canary Islands.
The Canary Islands themselves are named after dogs, not canaries — the Latin 'Insulae Canariae' means 'Islands of the Dogs' — meaning Canary Wharf, on the Isle of Dogs, is etymologically the Isle of Dogs of the Isle of Dogs.
