Richmond upon Thames, London
PocketsHam (Riverside Drive · King George's Field · Broughton Avenue)Richmond Park, Sheen Gate & Petersham (Sidmouth Wood · Ham Common)Richmond Central
Ham, Petersham and Richmond Riverside stretches from the Thames at Richmond down through the water meadows at Petersham and across the western edge of Richmond Park. Nearly 80 per cent of the ward sits inside a conservation area and the 150 listed buildings include three at Grade I: Ham House, the seventeenth-century Stuart mansion on the river; the paired listing of The Wick and Wick Cottage two kilometres away at the top of Richmond Hill; and the eighteenth-century Sudbrook Park, now Richmond Golf Club. Green space dominates — Richmond Park alone accounts for nearly 470 hectares within the ward boundary, with the meadows, Ham Common and Petersham fields adding to it. The physical setting — Georgian houses looking across meadows that Turner painted — is effectively unique in Greater London. The obvious trade-off is reach: public transport here is almost non-existent by London standards, with no Tube, no Overground, and the nearest rail stations sitting on the far side of Richmond town, so residents drive or cycle. Housing is also expensive for what you get.

Ham House was the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Lauderdale, power brokers of Charles II's Restoration court; Elizabeth Murray installed one of the earliest indoor bathrooms in the country, and the so-called Cabal Room is said to have hosted meetings of the secretive 'Cabal' ministry in the 1670s.
Richmond Park was walled in by Charles I between 1632 and 1637, an eight-mile brick perimeter thrown up to pen a deer herd of around 2,000 fallow and red deer; the king's fencing of common land was deeply unpopular, but the descendants of his herd still roam the park.
