Wanstead Village sits in the south-west of Redbridge against Epping Forest, a conservation-area pocket whose grain is set by the village centre and the park edge. The thirty-two listed buildings include the Grade II* Christ Church — built 1860–61 by George Gilbert Scott as a chapel of ease to St Mary the Virgin — along with the Grade II* Gazebo and Grotto at the back of 20 Wanstead Place and the Grade II* Garden Temple in the back garden of 14 The Temple. Roding Valley Park and the forest edges give around fifty-eight hectares of green. Transport is moderate, with Wanstead on the Central line and Snaresbrook alongside.
