Enfield, London
Carterhatch sits in the north-east of Enfield, between Enfield Town and the Lea Valley. The ward's name preserves the memory of an old gate into Enfield Chase, the medieval royal hunting ground, and the lane has been a boundary feature since at least the 16th century. The area filled in with residential development in the 1930s, and the entire ward now sits inside a conservation area. There are six listed buildings including the Grade II Church of St James, the Grade II Bell Inn and the Grade II Ripaults Factory. Green cover totals 41.6 hectares with Enfield Playing Fields at 20.3 hectares as the headline space, and safety and air-quality scores are respectable for outer Enfield. There are six Ofsted-outstanding schools nearby, and local shops and takeaways run to around 69 food venues. The drawbacks: public-transport access is moderate, limited to buses and the distant Turkey Street station, culture scores are low with few destinations in the ward, and the food and non-food offer is modest. This is a quiet residential ward with good basics but limited pull.
