Croydon, London
Crystal Palace and Upper Norwood sit on the ridge above central Croydon, where the borough meets Bromley, Lambeth and Southwark at the Crystal Palace triangle. The character is a hilltop Victorian suburb with a long cultural reach. Green space is the strength: over fifty-one hectares anchored by South Norwood Lake, on top of the ridge-top parkland and easy access to the Crystal Palace Park complex just beyond the boundary. Heritage runs to eighteen listed buildings including the Grade II* Church of St John and Grade II Rosebank and Rockmount; the ward is more than a quarter covered by conservation area; and over eighty food and ninety-five non-food venues give the triangle its distinctive nightlife and independent-shop density. The weaknesses are schools and transport. Outstanding schools nearby are only two, low for an inner-outer ward of this type, and public transport is moderate — Crystal Palace station on the Overground helps but there is no Tube, and the ridge topography makes bus links slow. Crime sits close to the London middle.
