Camden, London
Bloomsbury sits between Oxford Street and the Euston Road in the south of Camden, the planned district of Georgian squares developed on the Bedford Estate, which passed to the Russell family (Earls, then Dukes, of Bedford) in 1669, with most of the squares laid out from the late 18th century onwards. It remains one of London's great intellectual quarters, home to the British Museum, University College London and most of the University of London. The ward carries 296 listed buildings, including the Grade I British Museum and the Grade I Church of St Pancras, and around 87 percent of the ward sits inside a conservation area. Transport is as good as it gets — Russell Square, Holborn, Euston Square and Tottenham Court Road give the highest public-transport access in London. Around 878 food venues and 580 non-food venues pack the streets around Brunswick Square and Bedford Square, with 33 Ofsted-outstanding schools within reach. The drawbacks are those of any central ward. Safety scores are low, driven by nightlife and footfall around Tottenham Court Road, air-quality is poor thanks to taxi traffic, and green space amounts to just 8.1 hectares of mostly locked Georgian squares. Residents walk to Russell Square or Regent's Park.
