Tower Hamlets, London
Spitalfields and Banglatown sits on the northern edge of the City of London in Tower Hamlets, covering Brick Lane, Fournier Street and the streets of former Huguenot weavers. The area became its own parish in 1729, carved out of Stepney as a show of Anglican authority over a district dominated by French Protestants and other dissenters. Hawksmoor's Christ Church Spitalfields, built between 1714 and 1729, dominates the ward. Successive waves of Huguenot, Jewish and Bangladeshi migration have left a remarkable density of heritage — 139 listed buildings including the Grade I Christ Church, the Grade I 56 Artillery Lane and the Grade II* 19 Princelet Street. Around 41.6 percent of the ward sits inside a conservation area. Transport is as good as it gets: Liverpool Street, Aldgate East and Shoreditch High Street give the highest public-transport access in London. Around 418 food venues and 386 non-food venues pack Brick Lane, Commercial Street and Spitalfields Market, and 42 Ofsted-outstanding schools sit within reach. The drawbacks: safety scores are very low thanks to nightlife-driven theft and violence around Brick Lane and Commercial Street, green space is only 2.3 hectares with Vallance Gardens the largest patch, and air-quality is poor.
