Westminster, London
The West End ward covers Mayfair, Soho and the southern half of Marylebone — the core of what Londoners have called 'the West End' since the early nineteenth century. The built fabric is dense, historic and almost entirely inside a conservation area: 982 listed buildings, including Apsley House at Hyde Park Corner and Chandos House on Queen Anne Street, both at Grade I. Public transport here is as good as it gets in London, with a dozen Tube lines and buses crossing the ward, and the food and entertainment offer runs into the thousands of venues. The obvious trade-off is that the West End is not primarily a residential place. Crime figures are dominated by theft and violence tied to nightlife and tourist footfall rather than day-to-day residential risk, air quality is poor by the standards of the rest of the city, and housing is both scarce and priced for the global market. Green space amounts to squares — Grosvenor, Berkeley, Soho — and a strip of Hyde Park on the western edge.

Apsley House, the Duke of Wellington's London home at Hyde Park Corner, was once given the address 'Number 1, London' because it was the first house reached after passing through the tollgate on the Knightsbridge turnpike into the city.
In September 1854 Dr John Snow traced a deadly cholera outbreak to a single water pump on Broad Street, now Broadwick Street, in Soho; he had the parish authorities remove its handle, founding modern epidemiology in the process. A replica pump and the John Snow pub mark the spot today.
