Southwark, London
PocketsElephant & Castle (Dickens' Fields · Newington Gardens · west · Elephant Park)London Bridge & Bermondsey West (Tabard Gardens · Long Lane · Abbey Street · Great Dover Street)Borough & Southwark Street
Chaucer sits at the north of Southwark either side of Borough High Street, one of the oldest roads in the London area and the starting point for Chaucer's Canterbury pilgrims who met at the Tabard Inn. The ward contains the Grade I George Inn — London's only surviving galleried coaching inn — plus the Grade II* Church of St George the Martyr and Dickens' 'Little Dorrit' parish church. There are 62 listed buildings, with around 16 percent of the ward inside a conservation area. Transport is among the best in London: Borough, London Bridge, Elephant & Castle and the Elizabeth line at Bermondsey give the highest public-transport access band. The food scene runs to around 147 venues with 140 non-food venues, and 45 Ofsted-outstanding schools sit within reach. The drawbacks: green space is limited to 7.2 hectares with Tabard Gardens the largest patch inside the ward, safety scores are very low reflecting Borough High Street nightlife and station-area crime, and air-quality is poor from heavy traffic on the A3 and around London Bridge.

The Tabard Inn on Borough High Street was the meeting place for Chaucer's Canterbury pilgrims, and its host Henry Bailley was M.P. for Southwark in 1376 and 1379; Borough High Street was the sole gateway between London and the south coast before Westminster Bridge opened.
