Rainham & Wennington sits at the southern edge of Havering on the Thames estuary, a ward of two halves — an old village centre and a vast area of protected marshland. The character is rural-fringe with outstanding ecology. The sixteen listed buildings include the Grade I Norman Church of St Helen and St Giles, reputedly the oldest building in Havering, plus the Grade II* Rainham Hall and its lodge, and the RSPB Rainham Marshes reserve (opened to the public in 2006) runs along the southern edge. Total green space reaches 166 hectares and the nature reserve designation keeps the air and nature scores strong. The trade-offs are severe: public-transport access is almost none with c2c services at Rainham the only rail option, education scores are weak with only two outstanding-rated schools within reach, safety is middling, and culture is thin.
