Hackney, London
PocketsAmhurst Road & Pembury Estate (east · Marcon Place · Downs Park Road · Hackney Downs)Hackney Central (Mare Street Bridge · The Hackney Empire)Dalston East
Hackney Central sits on Mare Street in the heart of the borough, the commercial and cultural spine that pulled the surrounding streets up through the 2010s. Thirty listed buildings anchor the ward, including the Grade I old tower of the former Church of St Augustine, the Grade II* Hackney Empire — opened in 1901 to a Frank Matcham design and reopened in 2004 after a seventeen-million-pound refurbishment — and the Grade II Manor. The Overground at Hackney Central and Hackney Downs gives very good public-transport access, and 51 outstanding-rated schools fall within the catchment. The high street, Narrow Way and Chatsworth Road support a busy food and retail scene with 101 food and 123 non-food venues currently open. The flipside is on the safety and pollution side: safety scores sit well below the London median, air quality along Mare Street is among the worst in the borough, and green space inside the ward is under two hectares — London Fields and Hackney Downs are short walks away rather than on the doorstep.
