Southwark, London
Peckham sits north of Peckham Rye Park and west of Nunhead, a dense Southwark ward with a long-standing West African high street and a layer of artist-led activity that has reshaped the Bellenden area since the 1990s. Transport is reasonable: the Overground at Peckham Rye and Queens Road and buses up Rye Lane and along the Old Kent Road route give workable links into the City and Bridge stations. Schools nearby score well at both primary and secondary level — Peckham's education footprint is one of the strongest in south London — and housing remains more affordable than in Dulwich or Camberwell immediately to the south and west. Heritage indicators are modest — eleven listed buildings, including the Church of St Luke and a cluster of 1970s housing at Furley Road and Newent Close — and only around a tenth of the ward sits inside a conservation area. Green space is limited within the ward itself; residents walk to Peckham Rye, just across the boundary.

As a child in 1767, William Blake walked across Peckham Rye Common and claimed to have seen 'a tree filled with angels, bright angelic wings bespangling every bough like stars' — his first recorded vision, and the event Muriel Spark drew on two centuries later for 'The Ballad of Peckham Rye'.
Bellenden Road carries street furniture — cast-iron bollards, mosaic lampposts, pavement pieces — designed by Antony Gormley, Tom Phillips and John Latham as part of a 2000 Southwark Council renewal scheme; all three had studios on or around the road at the time.
