Greenwich, London
Abbey Wood sits on rising ground in the south-east of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, taking its name from Lesnes Abbey Woods to the east. The abbey itself was founded in 1178 by Richard de Luci, Chief Justiciar of England, and its ruins still stand in the woods just beyond the ward boundary. The entire ward sits inside a conservation area and the largest green space in reach is Bostall Woods at 34.7 hectares, with total green cover reaching 76.9 hectares. Transport has been transformed: Abbey Wood is now an Elizabeth line terminus with direct services to Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf in under 20 minutes, which is reshaping the market picture. Around 40 food venues line the station parade and Wilton Road. The drawbacks are still significant. There is only one listed building — the Grade II Delight Sculpture in Abbey Wood Park — reflecting a post-war council-estate fabric, three Ofsted-outstanding schools nearby, and safety sits close to the London median rather than above it. Culture scores are low.

Lesnes Abbey was founded in 1178 by Richard de Luci, Chief Justiciar of England, possibly in penance for his role in the conflict between Henry II and Thomas Becket; de Luci retired there and was buried in the chapter house in 1179.
