Farringdon Without is the City of London's westernmost ward, stretching outside the old Roman wall from Fleet Street up through Holborn and Smithfield. It was created in 1394 when the larger Farringdon Ward was split in two, and its name still records the original medieval geography. The density of heritage is remarkable: 183 listed buildings including the Grade I listings at Hare Court, Holborn Bars and Dr Johnson's House, with around 65 percent of the ward inside a conservation area. Transport is as good as it gets — Farringdon, Chancery Lane, Blackfriars and the Elizabeth line deliver the highest public-transport access in London.
