City of London, London
PocketsAldersgate
Aldersgate covers the north-west quadrant of the City, running from St Paul's across the Barbican estate and up toward the Museum of London site. The character is a compression of medieval parish churches, post-war modernism and working financial district. Heritage is deep despite the bombing history: twelve listed buildings include the Grade I Goldsmiths' Hall, headquarters of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, and the Grade I churches of St Botolph without Aldersgate and St Anne and St Agnes. Connectivity is at the top of the scale — the highest public-transport access in London — with Barbican, St Paul's, Moorgate and Farringdon all within walking distance. Culture scores well on the back of the Barbican Centre. The drawbacks are what you would expect in the City. Green space is close to zero, with Postman's Park at 0.3 hectares the entire anchor, the residential population is small, and air quality sits very low reflecting the density of traffic and buildings. Schools nearby are few.

Goldsmiths' Hall, Grade I listed, has been the Goldsmiths' Company's site since 1339; the present building is the third hall on the spot and was designed by Philip Hardwick between 1829 and 1835.
