City of London, London
Cripplegate occupies the north-west quadrant of the City of London, the Barbican estate and its immediate surrounds. The thirty-five listed buildings include the Grade I Church of St Giles-without-Cripplegate, a medieval foundation gutted in the Blitz and restored in the 1960s, along with the Grade II* Wood Street Police Station and the Grade II* tower of the former Church of St Alban. Transport is the best in London on the measured index, with Barbican, Moorgate and Liverpool Street all close and eight being the highest band on the public-transport access scale. The cultural pull is the Barbican Centre, one of Europe's largest combined arts venues, and the food and retail around Whitecross Street and Aldersgate is dense in working hours. The downsides are structural and well known: almost no green beyond Beech Gardens and the Barbican podium, weekend emptiness that pulls down the market score, and safety figures that look weak because denominators are tiny and City workers double the daytime population.
