Camden, London
Camden Town sits at the junction of the Regent's Canal and the main lines out of Euston, the busiest night-time high street in north London. The ward's heritage stock is dense: forty-eight listed buildings including the Grade II* Roundhouse, Church of St Michael and Camden Incline Winding Engine House, and nearly half the area inside a conservation area. The Roundhouse was built in 1846-7 as a railway engine shed for locomotive turning before becoming a performing-arts venue from 1964. Transport is superb, with very good public-transport access and the Northern line, Overground, and frequent buses, plus walk-in access to King's Cross and St Pancras. Culture scores near the top of London and food and non-food venue counts run into the hundreds. The downsides are concentrated and well-known: safety is very weak, driven by nightlife-related theft and violence on the High Street rather than residential risk on the canal-side squares; air pollution is poor; and green space is tiny at barely 1.6 hectares.
