Lambeth, London
PocketsVauxhall South (north-east · River Thames · Vauxhall Park · Nine Elms)Kennington West & Vauxhall North (Woodstock Court · Pedlar's Park · Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens)
Vauxhall covers the riverbank between Vauxhall Bridge and Nine Elms, one of the most physically transformed wards in London over the past two decades. Forty-six listed buildings include the Grade II* Herbert House, Brunswick House and Vauxhall Bridge. Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens — the modern park named after the legendary 18th- and 19th-century pleasure gardens that Samuel Pepys mentioned as early as 1662 and that closed in 1859 — anchors the public realm, though at under three hectares within a much wider greening programme. Public transport is excellent via Vauxhall on the Victoria line, mainline and the busiest bus interchange in south London, and the food-and-drink scene along South Lambeth Road is dense. Thirty-two outstanding schools lie within reach. The drawbacks: safety readings are well below the London average, driven by night-time economy traffic around the gay village and club strip; air quality is poor thanks to the one-way gyratory; and heritage texture is uneven, with tall new towers jostling against the 19th-century fabric.
