Valence sits in the middle of the Becontree estate in Barking and Dagenham, the interwar council-built suburb that was once the largest of its kind in the world. The street plan is orderly and the scale is uniformly domestic. Valence House, Grade II* listed and partially surrounded by a medieval moat, is the ward's anchor, and it houses the borough's free museum and the Fanshawe family portrait collection. The adjoining Church of St Mary and Bentry Heath House add two more Grade II entries to a small but significant listed-building set. Ten outstanding-rated schools sit within easy reach and the food offer along the high road is surprisingly dense. The drawbacks are the thin green space at around 10 hectares, the absence of any conservation area on Becontree streets themselves, and safety and pollution scores that sit in the middle of the pack rather than offering any particular protection.
