East Putney sits in the south-west of Wandsworth, running from the Thames up the climb of Putney Hill towards Wimbledon Common. Putney appears in the Domesday Book as Putelei, its name meaning the 'landing place where hawks are seen', and the modern suburb is largely a product of 1880s expansion: 27 new streets, the District Railway, a new Putney Bridge and the Embankment were all created in that decade.
