Tower Hamlets, London
PocketsBrick Lane North (Bethnal Green Road · Squirries Street · west · Allen Gardens · Shoreditch High Street)Columbia Road (Ravenscroft Park · Bethnal Green Road · Ion Square Gardens)
Weavers sits in the north of Tower Hamlets, running from Brick Lane up toward Columbia Road and taking its name from the Huguenot silk weavers who settled here after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Sixty-two listed buildings include the Grade II* Church of St Matthew, built 1743–46 by George Dance after Nicholas Hawksmoor's earlier plans were abandoned, alongside Grade II Culham House and Iffley House. Half the ward is within a conservation area. Public transport is very good via Shoreditch High Street and Bethnal Green, fifty-one outstanding schools lie within reach, and the food-and-drink scene along Brick Lane, Redchurch Street and Columbia Road is among the densest in east London. The drawbacks: safety readings are well below the London average, driven by nightlife footfall and Brick Lane activity; air quality is poor thanks to Bethnal Green Road and the surrounding grid; and green cover within the ward is thin at under seven hectares.
