Newham, London
Stratford covers the town centre, the Olympic Park and the station complex, one of London's most transformed wards. Thirty-four listed buildings include the Grade I Tide Mill (known as the House Mill) on the Lea, the Grade II* Theatre Royal — opened in 1884 and associated with Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop from 1953 — and the Grade II* Abbey Mills Pumping Station, designed by Charles Driver for Joseph Bazalgette and built 1865–1868. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, at over forty-four hectares within the ward, anchors a wider area transformed from post-industrial scrubland for the London 2012 Games and renamed for the Diamond Jubilee. Public transport is outstanding via Stratford's mainline, Elizabeth line, Jubilee, Central and DLR services. Twenty-four outstanding schools lie within reach. The drawbacks: safety readings are among the lowest in the batch, driven by station and night-time footfall; air quality sits in the poorer band thanks to the A12 and A11; and heritage texture is uneven, with new towers dominating the skyline against a few protected Victorian anchors.
