Tower Hamlets, London
Limehouse sits on the Thames in the south of Tower Hamlets between Canary Wharf and Wapping, a ward defined by its riverside basin, its Hawksmoor church and its long history as London's first Chinatown. Roughly half the ward falls inside conservation area. The 38 listed buildings include the Grade I Church of St Anne, consecrated in 1730 as one of the twelve churches built under the 1711 Act, and now one of the surviving works of Nicholas Hawksmoor in the East End, plus the Grade II Limekiln Dock remnant. Very good public-transport access links the DLR at Limehouse and Westferry and the c2c national rail service. Twenty-three outstanding-rated schools sit within reach and air quality scores well for the location. The negatives: green space inside the ward is very limited at under four hectares with Ropemakers Fields the largest named park, safety sits below the borough median, and market conditions are tight thanks to the Canary Wharf adjacency.
