Southwark, London
Dulwich Village is a Southwark ward built around a single straight road — the Village itself — with Dulwich Park, the College grounds and the Picture Gallery arranged around it. Nearly eighty per cent of the ward sits inside a conservation area, and the 69 listed buildings include three at Grade II*: Bell House, the Church of St Paul, and the Half Moon pub. The area's character is set by the Dulwich Estate, still a charitable foundation descended from Edward Alleyn's 1619 College of God's Gift, which has managed building and land use here continuously for four centuries. That continuity is the reason the housing stock is intact, the schools are overwhelmingly rated Outstanding, and the green space runs into the dozens of hectares. The trade-off is reach and cost: there is no Tube station, trains run from West Dulwich, Sydenham Hill and North Dulwich, and prices have been among the highest in south London for a generation.

Dulwich Picture Gallery, designed by Sir John Soane and opened in 1817, holds Rembrandts, Rubens, Poussins and Gainsboroughs assembled by two art dealers who had been commissioned to build a Polish royal collection that was never delivered — the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth was partitioned out of existence before the pictures could be handed over.
On the night of 20–21 July 1944 a V-1 flying bomb landed in Gallery Road, blowing a 15-foot crater and destroying the mausoleum that held the bodies of the gallery's three founders; most of the paintings survived because they had been evacuated to the National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth in 1939.
