West Thornton sits between Thornton Heath and West Croydon in the north-west of the borough, a densely built late-Victorian and Edwardian ward along the London Road corridor. The three listed buildings — the Grade II Church of St Saviour, the West Croydon United Reformed Church and the wall enclosing St Saviour's churchyard — are the only formal heritage anchors. Twenty-two Ofsted outstanding rated schools fall within comfortable range, and the food and retail offer along London Road is long and busy, with just over a hundred eating places serving a very diverse community. The downsides are what the scores show. Crime sits below the London median along the main arteries, the cultural and nightlife offer is limited beyond local restaurants, and there is no conservation-area cover across the ward. Green provision is modest — around ten hectares, with Mayfield Road Playground the largest piece — and air quality suffers from traffic on the A23. Transport is moderate, with Thameslink at West Croydon and frequent buses.
