The common itself was around 300 acres of waste land in the early 19th century, a well-known haunt of highwaymen before the arrival of the railway in 1858 transformed the area. Holwood House was William Pitt the Younger's country retreat from 1785, and the park was landscaped on advice from Humphry Repton.
