Barking and Dagenham, London
Abbey sits at the heart of old Barking, wrapped around the ruins of the former royal monastery of St Mary and St Ethelburga and the parish church that grew up beside it. The ward combines the medieval town centre with the postwar estates and new-build towers that line the approach to Barking station. Heritage sits on the ground in visible form: the Grade I Parish Church of St Margaret, the Grade II* Fire Bell Gate and seven listed buildings in total, with around a third of the ward falling inside a conservation area. Transport is very good, with the District, Hammersmith and City, c2c and Overground lines all running through Barking station, and good local food at 121 open food venues. The flipside is severe: the safety score is among the lowest in east London, driven by town-centre anti-social behaviour and theft around the station, and green space is very limited — Abbey Green is under six hectares, with almost nothing else nearby.
