Victoria ward runs along the southern edge of Hackney, covering Well Street Common, South Hackney and the streets around Victoria Park. The area has been settled since at least the mid-15th century, when the common was called 'Well Street Field', and the parish church of St John of Jerusalem was built beside the common in 1848 as South Hackney became a parish in its own right. The Victoria Park conservation area covers most of the historic frontages, with around 47 percent of the ward inside a conservation area. There are 18 listed buildings including the Grade II* Church of St John of Jerusalem and the Grade II* former French Protestant Hospital (later Cardinal Pole School). Well Street Common at 3.9 hectares plus the edge of Victoria Park anchor the green space, total ward cover is 5.9 hectares, and 48 Ofsted-outstanding schools sit within reach. Around 56 food venues feed the area. The main drawbacks: moderate public-transport access outside Hackney Central, safety sits close to the London median, and green cover inside the ward is thin.
