Hackney, London
Clissold covers Stoke Newington and the Church Street corridor, wrapping Clissold Park and running up to the New River. The ward is tightly knit Victorian terraces around a genuine civic core. Forty-one listed buildings include the Grade I Church of St Matthias, the Grade II* refreshment rooms in the park, and the Grade II* Old Church of St Mary. Clissold House (Grade II) was built by Quaker merchant Jonathan Hoare by 1793 and gave its name to the park after William Crawshay's daughter Eliza eventually married Reverend Augustus Clissold. Clissold Park itself, at nearly twenty-three hectares, was opened as a public park in 1889. Forty-six outstanding schools lie within reach, by far the strongest in this batch, and food and drink along Church Street are a reliable destination. The drawbacks: air quality is poor, among the worst in this batch, because of Stoke Newington High Street; safety readings sit below the London average, driven by A10 corridor activity; and housing supply is very tight with a thin planning pipeline.
