Barnes sits in a bend of the Thames in the north of Richmond upon Thames, a riverside village that has kept much of its character. It appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Berne, and the village developed around Barnes Pond — the surviving Grand Pond from an original trio — with a Norman-origin St Mary's Church that Archbishop Stephen Langton dedicated in 1215 on his way back from the sealing of Magna Carta. The ward has 14 listed buildings including the Grade II* Church of St Mary, the Grade II* Hammersmith Bridge (which spans the river here) and the Grade II Sun Inn. Barn Elms Sports Centre gives 19.8 hectares, with total green cover a generous 62.6 hectares including access to the WWT Wetland Centre just beyond. Safety and schools are strong with 11 Ofsted-outstanding options nearby, and around 38 food venues line the village core. The drawbacks are connectivity-related. Public-transport access is limited to Barnes and Barnes Bridge stations plus buses — no tube — and journeys into central London run long.
