Courtfield sits in the east of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea around Gloucester Road and Cromwell Road, the great Victorian terraces running east from Earl's Court. The area was open meadowland until the 19th century — known in 16th-century records as Great Courtfield, famous in the 1740s for its nurseries and market gardens — and the squares of Courtfield Gardens began construction in 1873. The ward carries 73 listed buildings including the Grade I Natural History Museum front lodge and gates, the Grade II* 167 Queen's Gate and the Grade II* Church of St Augustine. The entire ward sits inside a conservation area. Transport is very good with Gloucester Road, South Kensington and Earl's Court giving very good public-transport access, and 10 Ofsted-outstanding schools sit within reach. Around 116 food venues and 114 non-food venues line the Cromwell Road corridor. The drawbacks: green space inside the ward is limited to around 1.4 hectares, market affordability is very poor given the central position and international demand, and safety scores sit below the London median reflecting hotel-district theft patterns.
