Barnsbury sits in the western half of Islington between Caledonian Road and Upper Street, a conservation-area ward almost entirely covered by late-Georgian and early-Victorian squares and terraces. The 153 listed buildings — one of the densest heritage footprints in London — include the Grade II* former Church of Holy Trinity and the Grade II* Numbers 1–24 and 25–48 of Lonsdale Square, with Gibson, Thornhill and Lonsdale squares together making one of the finest sequences of mid-nineteenth-century residential development in the city. Thirty-six Ofsted outstanding rated schools fall within reach, transport is good with King's Cross, Caledonian Road and Highbury & Islington close at hand, and food and retail are dense around Upper Street. The trade-offs show in the safety and air lines: crime sits below the London median, pulled by drift from Upper Street and King's Cross, and air quality is poor along the main roads. Barnard Park and the canal give limited green relief.
